A DAYCARE PROVIDER'S CHRISTMAS
by Lisa Henderson

'Twas the day before Christmas,
And all through the daycare
Not a creature was stirring,
Not even a teddy bear.

The diapers were all stacked
In the cubbies with care
In hopes that St. Nicholas
Soon would be there.

The children were nestled,
All snug on their cots.
The kitten was sleeping
Alongside the tots.

My assistant in her apron
And I in mine too,
Headed out to the kitchen,
There were more chores to do.

When out on the driveway
There arose such a noise!
I figured it was Licensing,
Or the neighbor's boys.

Away to the window,
I flew like a flash,
Tripping over the dollhouse
In my mad dash.

I dodged the playpen,
And hit my arm on a shelf,
Then bumped into the lamp
Before catching myself.

When what to my weary
Old eyes should appear,
But a patrol car with lights,
And then I knew fear.

Six other cars came,
With cops in them all.
They circled the house,
And I heard the call.

"Now Bud, Now Jim,
Now Bill, Now John!
On Brian, On Matt,
On Robert, On Don!

To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
Arrest those providers!
Arrest them all!"

So up to the housetop,
Those awful cops flew.
My assistant and I
Didn't know what to do.

The sweat on my brow,
The panic in my heart,
It all overcame me,
And I fell apart.

I woke minutes later,
A cloth on my head.
My assistant was laughing
And then she said:

"Miss Lisa you worked
Much too hard today!
Caring for children is
More than child's play!

After the story
You read them at nap,
You zonked out yourself
With the book in your lap!

You must have been dreaming
Some crazy dream!
Never have I heard
Such a blood-curdling scream!"

Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year!
