Angels In My Life
by Lisa M. Henderson,
B.S. in Child Development/Family Relationships
As I look back over the past few years of my life, I realize my life
has drastically changed. I once felt I had achieved nothing of value
in my life. There were few things of which I was truly proud. My
circle of friends seemed very small. Today, I feel as though I have
achieved much and am proud of what I have been able to accomplish. It
is apparent to me that my immense circle of friends has made such an
influence on my life, that they have contributed to my successes.
They are my angels.
I remember the angels who listened to me and comforted me when I was
abused physically and verbally by an angry husband. I remember the
angels who sent me good wishes and prayers when I finally gained the
courage to get myself and my two children out of that marriage. When
I had no money to change the locks on the apartment, my angels
generously and anonymously provided the funds to ensure we were safe
from a violent husband. The money that I received went even further
to buy groceries and shoes for my children.
I remember the angels who helped me to find myself again. They
encouraged me and reminded me of all the wonderful things of which I
was capable. They called me on the phone and they wrote me letters,
making sure that I was able to survive. I remember the angels who,
again and again, helped support me financially and emotionally
through some of the most difficult days and weeks of my life.
The angels were present at Christmas time; more than once piling up
presents under the tree so that my children would know the joys of
the holiday season. I remember the angels who sent generous amounts
of gift certificates so I could choose my children's Christmas gifts.
The joy of giving came from so many wonderful people that it brought
tears to my eyes. I remember the angels who collected gifts from
other angels and drove over a hundred miles to deliver them to me in
person. I remember the angels who surprised me through the holiday
seasons with cards and letters and gifts even for me.
I remember the angels who would not let me drown in my depressions,
refusing to listen to me when I said I didn't want to be bothered.
Those angels prayed for my spirits to lift and continue on, even when
I felt there was no light. I remember the angels who gave me a strong
shoulder to lean on and those who did not judge me for my actions or
decisions. I remember the angels who, even when immersed in their own
problems and heartaches, reached out to me to brighten my day.
Yes, I know there are angels. Many of you who read this will
recognize yourself as one of my angels. It is only because of the
angels in my life that I can call myself a success. It is you who
have loved me, cared for my family, and supported me in my darkest
hours. Many of you probably don't realize how much you have touched
my life, changed my life, and uplifted my life. But know that you are
with me and are remembered with great gratitude and love.
