Your employee's baby will get sick much less often--probably
about one third to one eighth as often as a bottle-fed baby. Your
employee will need to take correspondingly fewer sick leaves.
She'll be much happier too, and will probably be better
motivated.
To encourage a breastfeeding mother return to work and work
productively, you can provide nursing or breast pumping breaks,
and a "lactation room" here's a list of
employers that provide such facilities). Breast pumping breaks
will take less time than cigarette breaks or water-fountain-chat
breaks that other employees take--with a fully automatic double
pump, the breasts can be emptied in about ten minutes, and two to
three pumping sessions a day are enough for a mother who's already
established her milk supply.
When these simple measures are taken, your employee will be
much more reliable and productive, and also much more likely
to stay on the job. You'll save considerable money on
training new employees.
