Girl Scout Yarn Bugs

What a great project! Makes a terrific table centerpiece. We used teal foam for Junior Girl Scouts. You can also use brown for Brownies or green for Cadettes and Seniors.

You need:

Instructions:

Make a pompon by wrapping yarn around floppy disk (or heavy cardboard) as least 100 times. Mix the yarn colors any way you would like. Cut a 6" piece of yarn and slide it under wrapped yarn. Tie tightly into a double knot. Turn floppy over and cut completely through yarn on this side. Turn yarn blob sideways and smooth down strands.

Ask on adult to slice off the bottom of the Styrofoam ball so it stands on end. Cover the top and sides of the ball with tacky glue. Separate the strands of the pompon to fit the Styrofoam ball up inside. Press pompon into place. Arrange yarn. Glue on foam feet.

Print Pattern for Hands. Cut hands out of foam. Bend fingers of the right hand as shown in photo above. Use glue gun to secure fingers. Cut pipe cleaners in half. Glue a half of the pipe cleaner to the back of each hand. Cut a piece of craft foam to 1¾" x 2¾". Adjust size if necessary to fit your actual troop number. Glue troop number to this foam flag. Glue half of a pipe cleaner to the back of the flag. Glue pipe cleaner to the left hand and fold fingers over, gluing in place. Poke pipe cleaner arms into the Styrofoam ball.

Spray paint cap. It will take several coats. Let dry. Cut out a small girl scout emblem and glue to front. Glue to cap to yarn bug's head. Glue on eyes.
