You know how for most kids art projects, the first thing it tells you is
to "cover the work area with newspaper".  Have ya ever noticed that if
you let projects dry, you have this lovely creation, stuck to a big glob
of icky newspaper?  LOL.  Help is here.  Instead of newspaper, let each
child work on wax paper.  Most things (glue, paint, etc) will peel right
off, and if it does stick, it's not nearly as nasty looking as the
newspaper.
