Here's a relatively easy way to clean the foliage on your smaller houseplants after a long winter indoors. Fill the tub, sink, or a large pail with hot water and liquid or flake soap. (Detergents are too strong.) Put the pot in a large plastic bag and draw the top of the bag around base of the plant. Dip the foliage in the soapy water and gently swish around.  If you think the plant may have spider mites, don't rinse, as the soap will help get rid of the pests and serve as a repellent. If there are no bugs on the plant, rinse off the soap and set aside to dry. (And make sure that the plant is suitable for bathing. For example, African violets are not.  Use only plants with gloss leaves, not fuzzy.)
