How to Dry Apples (Apple Chips)

  • Preheat oven to 250°F.
  • Wash firm, ripe apples and core them (you can keep the peels on). If the apples have bruises or soft spots, remove them.
  • Slice apples into very thin rings (about 1/16″ thick).
  • Dip both sides of each apple slice in lemon juice and arrange them in a single layer on a baking rack placed on top of a cookie sheet.
  • Place the sheet of apple slices in the oven and bake for approximately 1 hour (or until fairly dry and lightly browned).
  • Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and lift each apple slice up off the rack to prevent them from sticking as they cool.
  • Once the apple slices are cooled, they’ll be dry and crunchy.

After cooling completely, store the dried apple slices in an airtight container and keep in a cool, dry place.

TIPS:

  • Dried apple slices can be frozen
  • You can cut the apples into thicker rings or pieces, adjust the heating time.
  • For an extra treat, lightly sprinkle the apple slices with cinnamon and sugar before putting them in the oven.
  • If you’d like to rehydrate the dried apple slices before using them, pour boiling water over them and let sit for about 5 minutes or so.
