2009 Caldecott Winner Every year one children’s book is awarded the highly regarded Caldecott Medal. Much like the momentum that builds in the film community before the Oscars, the world of children’s literature experiences its own electricity until the big announcement. And the winner is….. The House in the Night illustrated by Beth Krommes written by Susan Marie Swanson This simple, poetic bedtime story will provide reassurance to your nieces and nephews who are scared of the darkness nightfall brings. The sparse text focuses on the simple, comforting objects that represent the comforts of home. “Here is the key to the house. In the house burns a light. In that light rests a bed. On that bed waits a book.” The book continues along its path from a warm home to the starlit sky and back again, identifying on its journey all of the things that are just as soothing at night as they are during the day. Caldecott Medal is based on illustrations, not words The artistic rendering of the story, not the written content, is actually the single most important criteria for selecting the Caldecott winner. Beth Krommes complements her luminous black and white illustrations with touches of gold. The effect is both captivating and magical, and will surely alleviate any child’s fear of darkness. Like other Caldecott winners, the pictures are masterfully interwoven with the text, making it impossible for either one to stand alone. Don’t forget the runners-up! Three books have been selected as Caldecott Honor books for 2009. The illustrations in these titles are equally interesting and remarkable. You will enjoy exploring these works of art with your nieces and nephews as well. A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever, written and illustrated by Marla Frazee How I Learned Geography, written and illustrated by Uri Shulevitz A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams, illustrated by Melissa Sweet, written by Jen Bryant Now that the winners have been announced, you will see these Caldecott books prominently displayed in every bookstore and library.
