Marley and Me - Why I am mad that I brought my kids to this movie....

It IS a very heartwarming film about a family and the changes they go through as they grow up. The film starts with them getting married, and they end up with three kids, and this dog is there through it all. Personally, I loved the movie. It was about the choices we make and how sometimes our life doesn't end up the way we planned, and how that is so much better than what we planned. It really is an amazing movie.

HOWEVER.......

Okay, first there are a lot of sexual innuendos and sex scenes. I actually covered Cassidy's eyes not once but twice. My boys, ages 14 and 15 were VERY uncomfortable. They made it very clear that they were making babies! Squeaky bed in one scene and all! This movie was rated PG.  The commercials all made it seem like this was just a goofy movie about a naughty puppy.  The funny scenes you saw on the commercials?  Those were about all the funny scenes....

There is a scene where she (Jennifer Anniston's character) has a miscarriage. It is horrible, heartbreaking, and children need not see that!

There are scenes where the parents fight and say stupid things to each other that little kids don't need to see.

But the worst part, to top it all off, the movie ends with a VERY long tragic scene of them putting the dog to sleep in the vet's office. No happy ending.  And it drags on and on and on.

They even bury the dog in their yard and show the dog in the hole! (It is wrapped in a blanket, but still, you can sure tell what it is. Is was horrible!

Everyone there was bawling - old and young. It scared the little kids so bad that some were actually screaming and parents were taking them out. They billed this as a cutsie movie for 4-5 year old (in my opinion) and it just is NOT!!!!!

Lack of reading is the "Marley problem"!

Here is what I see as the major problem. We are a society which DOES NOT READ. People need to understand that MOST movies are based on BOOKS! Ta-da!!!! Marley and Me by John Grogan is a NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER... and for good reason!!! The movie makers DID NOT hide this fact. In fact, they used it to market the movie. News flash: Books that make the New York Times Bestseller list are NOT FOR CHILDREN.

When a movie is made which is based on a book, one should ALWAYS read the book, before taking children to the movie. Or at the very least, one could read what the book is about.

I do not believe that the movie industry tried to deceive the public. The public needs to wake up and READ.

When a movie is rated PG, what does that mean? Parental Guidance suggested. How does a parent guide? A parent guides by leading. Unfortunately most people view this as LEADING our children to the movie theater and sitting with them instead of LEADING in doing the research before we expose our children to something.

Cutsie? NO! Heartwarming and beautiful for the appropriate audience? INCREDIBLY! I viewed the movie with my 14 year old daughter and we had a wonderful time, great discussion, and I think she would enjoy reading the book now.

I READ THE BOOK FIRST. No surprises for me. Please do not blame the movie industry for your lack of research.

I stand by my review that this was billed as a cutsie puppy movie for children. PG movies should NOT include sex scenes!!!!! PG movies used to be Disney type movies! Our society has made sex okay to kids, and that bothers me a lot!
