 Evan's Birth Story

Submitted by ChildFun Mama Tanya

Hi my name is Tonya Salter. I have always loved children and always looked forward to one day being a mother. A couple of weeks before my husband and I got married we decided to go ahead once we were married and try to have a baby.

We were surprised when we had been married 6 weeks and the doctor told me I was six weeks pregnant. I was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 10, so I was very careful during my pregnancy. Over all it went well. I was due in September and didn't have any swelling surprisingly. The doctors did an amniocentesis on me at 38 weeks to see if the baby's lungs were mature enough to go ahead and induce labor. It takes diabetic mothers babies lungs longer to mature, but they don't like to let her go full term because there is a greater risk of the baby being stillborn. My baby's lungs weren't mature enough to induce, so they let me go to my due date. I was very scared. I was put in the hospital on a Monday and put on pitocin early Tuesday morning.

I started having contractions but wasn't thinned out or dilated any. Wednesday morning I told my husband that by that night we would have our baby. Well, Wednesday night I still hadn't dilated any and I was so tired. The doctor sent me home, and said if I didn't come back on my own, be back early Friday morning.

Well, we showed back up early Friday morning and was placed on the pitocin drip again. I wasn't allowed to eat anything in case they had to do a c-section. About 9:30 my blood sugar dropped very low and I was having very hard and long contractions. The nurse came in and stopped the drip and I was told I would have a c-section. I was told the doctors would be there at 2:00 to do it. I laid there and watched that clock, about to go crazy. Finally about 4:00 they took me and at 4:46 our 8 lb 8 oz baby boy was born. The moment he came out he screamed and I cried because I knew his lungs were all right. He is now 5 years old and still screaming. LOL. My family was exhausted as well as I was from the long week, but it was well worth it.
