Conor Andrew's Birth Story
Born 9/2/94 Delivered by Dr. Mark Taylor Being pregnant in the summer was awful. It was August, 1994 and it was hot out. I still had eight more weeks of my pregnancy left.
We lived in a small 2 bedroom rented house and there was no air conditioning. I had been miserable the whole summer. 8 weeks seem like a long time to wait. I woke up one morning with some small Braxtion-Hicks contractions and pretty much ignored them as this was my second child. But, laying down and resting didn't make them go away. After 5 hours of being monitored at the hospital, they determined that it was pre-term labor and that I need to go on bedrest. Rest? Hunter was only about 16 months old. Who could rest? My mother in law saved the day and came to take Hunter to her house for a few days. She is so awesome! I was given some horrible medication to stop my labor. I hated it. I couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, and I had the shakes like I had just drank a whole pot of coffee. I was miserable without Hunter too, and that only made matters worse. After about 4 days, I made my mother in law bring my son back home. I couldn't stand being without him. I had some friends help out around the house, and my husband ran all the errands and did the shopping. By this point, our waterbed was much too uncomfortable to sleep on, and because of the medication I couldn't sleep well anyway, so I just slept on the couch with the tv on most nights. On Sept 1, 1994, a huge contraction woke me up. I looked at the clock on the VCR and it was just switching from 11:59 pm to 12:00 am. I decided to time them for a bit before I called my husband at work. I stood up to get my stopwatch and WHOOSH! My water broke. My husband was 25 miles away at work, and being Hunter had come so quickly, I knew I had to get to the hospital fast. I had a friend set up to watch Hunter, and another to take me to the hospital. Waiting for those two to show up was the longest 5 minutes of my life! And the car ride there was horrid. Every bump in the road was sheer terror. I was in full labor. My husband met us at the hospital. By the time I called my husband, waited for the friends and got to the hospital, it was already 12:30. I was dilated to 8 cm already. We knew it wouldn't be long. I was still five weeks from my due date and I was absolutely terrified. Hunter had been 3 weeks early, and at 6lbs 13oz, he was the tiniest baby I had ever seen. What would a five week early baby be like? I didn't have much time to worry because suddenly the nurses said I was at a ten and I could push. I really wanted some pain medication, but there was no time at all. I started to push and I felt like my insides were being ripped out. It was horrendous. Suddenly the doctor told me to stop. The baby was turned the wrong way. So, my obstetrician had to reach up and turn him the right way. Oh my, talk about pain. I almost passed out from it. Within a few minutes, my precious second son was born. Weighing in at a mere 5 lbs 12 oz, he was another miracle to bless my life. Although 5 weeks early, he was healthy and beautiful. After a 4 day hospital stay, we were both allowed to go home. Imagine my joy at having two wonderful sons. Just like I had always hoped for. God bless you and yours. Jenny
