Love and TV - From Dad's Point of Viewby Brian Jacob Rogers
I sat with my daughters this past weekend watching movies and TV. It was a great time, we ordered some pizza, wrestled and just plain had fun. In the midst of it all, a commercial came on. Then I spent the next 10 minutes explaining why the commercial had a sexual message to it. TV today seems to focus on one thing.....sex. The one thing that I have really learned in the past few years is that you need to watch what your children are watching. In these days when kids are killing each other, taking drugs, and running away, we need to make sure that our children know that they are loved and important. I start and end each day with my daughters by telling them I love them. I am lucky that when I tell the girls I love them, they don't get embarrassed. They smile and give me a kiss. We are slowly starting to watch even less tv, and spending more time playing. What does that have to do with love? Simple, TV has been used as a babysitter for toooooooooo long. We shouldn't be turning on a TV, sitting the children in from of it and forgetting them. They will learn the values that they see there and as anyone that has watched TV can tell you, those aren't the values that should be taught. Hope and Courtney have something they enjoy even more, kicking daddy off the computer. Normally, they wait til I am in the middle of something before they ask for it, but the alternative is just sitting in front of the TV loosing braincells. What better way to show your children that you love them than by preparing them for the future. Children love the computer. They love to see how it works, what games they can play on it, and the different sites they can find on the internet. The best advice I can give is to set aside some time when you can sit there and show them how to run it. Close the chatroom and open a mind. Remember, a computer is a tool that can be used to teach if you take the time. This rant is done for the week. Have a great week and remember to give your children a kiss. Brian
