HELP FOR TODAY - HOPE FOR TOMORROW

Cooperation

Feeling that our children can't or won't cooperate is one of the most frustrating feelings that parents can experience. Uncooperative behavior can be changed. However, it takes a great deal of patience, fortitude and consistency on the part of parents. Calmly offer the child choices rather than making demands. This allows the child to feel a sense of control and communicates to them that they are able to make decisions. By making their own decisions they also become aware of the consequences of their decisions. Be very specific and clear about what is required of the child. Above all, stay cool and calm and collected!

Example: Rather than demanding that a child take out the trash, ask the child specifically which chore they would prefer to do: take out the trash or clear off the dinner table? Children will learn that they are empowered as parents encourage them to make decisions, which directly impact their lives. This knowledge of the cause and effect of choices and consequences is an invaluable lesson for our children.
