from Kids in the Kitchen I bet whoever came up with the term "summer vacation" was not a stay-at-home mother. Those two words go together about as well as "diet ice cream". "You better keep the kids busy, or you're going to have a long summer." Those were my husband's words the week before school let out. Believe me, I know all about the agonies of being around a so-called bored child. They can drive you nuts! For the first few weeks of summer, I was Super Mom. We were busy everyday. Libraries, museums, the swimming pool--and that was just in one day! Somewhere in June, I started to fade. I was tired. We stopped doing things. Then it happened. "Mom! Michael said the B-word!" The dreaded B-word. See, in our house, the kids aren't allowed to say the word "bored". When I see all the stuff they have to keep them busy, and I hear them say they're bored, my blood boils. I sweat. I shake. It's not a pretty sight. With money tight, we started doing things around the house. I bought shaving cream and we played Beauty Shop. (My husband requested we do it in the back yard.) We took all the comforters off our beds and made tents. I actually got out the dreaded Play-Do. By July, I started to fade again. I was tired. I sent off for Disney Land brochures. (After seeing how much that would cost, cleaning up Play-Do wasn't so bad.) In August, my young Picassos discovered their talent for finger painting. I discovered that vinyl floors scratch when you scrape off dried paint with a butter knife. Finally, the first day of school arrived. As I walked my daughter down the newly decorated hall to her third grade classroom, we held hands. It was a beautiful moment. All the stress of that summer was lifted from my shoulders. I looked down at my angelic eight year-old and asked her if she had a good summer vacation. "Yeah, I can't wait until next summer!" I've already started saving for that trip to Disney Land.
