 Just Call Me Crazy

 by Shannon Jarvies

Being the parent of four little ones, I'm constantly amazed by how fast they learn and what great memories they have. On the other hand I'm also dumbfounded at the rate that I am losing my short term memory.

I'm convinced that when our kids crawl in bed with us at night, through osmosis, they are robbing me of my short term memory.

You know how it goes. Being ever so prepared and organized, you make a list of the supplies and groceries needed for you next shopping trip. The list is neatly posted on the fridge, available for you, or anyone else who has an item, to add to the list. Shopping day arrives, you get the kids ready, load them up and joyfully drive to the local market. And there sits your list on the refrigerator.

My daughter's pre-school teachers can also testify to my memory loss. Every time I've picked her up for the past week, each one has asked, "Did you get a copy of the snack schedule?". That's their way of politely saying "Don't forget Alyssa's snack day.. AGAIN!"

If you are at this point in your parenting career it's wise not to take too many vacations. You'll end up leaving a load of clothes in your sister-in-laws dryer and the diaper bag with the checkbook in it in a hotel room 300 miles away from home. And don't bother going to the mall because the items you purchase in one store will be left in another.

This is not only happening to me, but to my husband as well. I'm often delivering forgotten plans to his jobsite. The sad part is, we can't blame the responsibility of having four children. Not too long ago we left for a romantic weekend alone and left our luggage at home.

What bothers me is not necessarily my memory loss, but my age. I'm only 28 years old. I expected this to happen, but at the rate I'm going, when I leave the house at 35 I'll need a map of my hometown just so I'll know how to get home. So what do I do? Pin all of my lists to my shirt? Or maybe my husband and I should refuse to let any of our kids sleep with us. Or maybe I should continue as I have and concentrate on remembering items of utmost importance-my kids!
