Little feet stomp overhead
Jumping, laughing, they romp
Resisting bed.

"Shhhhhhh! Quiet now!"
She calls.
"Time for sleeping when night falls."

Silence descends
Floorboards creak
Time for only the house to speak.

How much time has passed from scene to scene?
The leaves have turned from brown to green.

Her hair
Once a shimmering crown of gold
Has taken a cast reserved for the old.

The voices she quieted have grown and gone
Still she hears them
Still they speak
Willing them to not be still now
She closes her eyes and longs for what she has known.

Come back little feet
Romp and stomp from bed to bed
Dance your patter above my head.

Then a ruckus at the door
Calling voices
Doorbell rings
"Grandma! Grandma!" the voices sing.

Young mother struggles to them contain,
Face showing a familiar strain.

"Shhhhhhh, quiet now," comes Grandmother's tone.
"Soon enough you'll be alone."

Listen to the music of your child's call,
Footfall running down the hall,
Weeping,
Leaping.
Soon enough we will all be sleeping.
Best not to slumber while we are still awake.
