Are children's centers the villages it takes to raise a family or are they the new evil empire? Parents who must seek care for young children outside their homes will welcome some help finding the quality care they need to feel comfortable with separating from their children during the day. Here are two resources that help. A Child Care Resource Center is a State agency anywhere in the USA that has visited both family home day care and child care centers sites in your area to make sure they are licensed. They will not tell you what is good or bad, just where facilities are located and give you what current costs they may have on file. They will tell you that preschool, nursery school and child care center child care development center are all names for places that do the same thing-take care of kids while parents are gone. "Are they teaching anything?" a parent may ask. The answer is that children learn something from every encounter they have with adults who care for them. That's why a parent needs to look at the interactions he or she sees between the children and the caregivers, before selecting a site. The professional organization for early childhood educators, called NAEYC has a list of preschools that have been accredited by their evaluators. If you don't get this information from the resource center in your area (these centers have names other than resource center and may be hard to track down) then phone NAEYC at 1- 800- 424-2460. This National Association for the Education of Young Children also has a web site: www.NAEYC.org Remember what ChildFun says: Raising kids is fun. Find a child care facility where the teachers show you they think this is true. Help make a wonderful village for children by your attitude and participation when you share the care of your young child.
