The Healing of Sadness

Why do we like to cry at sad movies, songs or books? Why do all the famous poets share such sad words at times? Wouldn't it be better to surround ourselves with happy, cheerful words and music 24 hours a day?

I don't think so. I love a happy poem or a comedy. But sometimes we need something to reach inside of ourselves and pull out those other emotions. Life can be sad. Grief is depressing. Losing someone we love is not a happy thing.

There have been times in my life when I would get into the car and refuse to turn on the radio. I would be in my house and sit in silence. Why? I did not want to face the emotions I knew were inside me. I knew that one sad song, or one heart wrenching movie would cause those emotions to explode, letting out all I had kept inside. I can say this looking back, but at the time I am sure I did not fully realize what was happening.

I also believe sharing someone else's words of sadness helps us to become more compassionate. For instance, if you read a story or poem of a woman that has lost a child you will understand through her words what she is feeling. You will then have a glimmer of understanding as to the pain she is going through.

This, I think, helps us to become a better person. We would be missing so much in life if we limited our reading and our movies or television to only happy, carefree selections. To tap those inner emotions of sadness, anger and grief helps us to become better Mothers, friends, wives and women.
