The Tests of Motherhood

By Brenda Hyde
Seeds of Knowledge

Have you noticed that Moms aren't suppose to get sick or have bad days? It seems to cause a disruption of the family routine. I am now in my last month of pregnancy, so I am uncomfortable and my hormones are raging.

I try to be honest without being negative in explaining the situation: "The baby is bigger now, and I have a hard time bending over, so I really need you to help me pick up more. No, not tomorrow. Let's do it right now." Hmmm...that didn't work as well as I had hoped.

It's such a fine line between wanting kids to understand your uncomfortable, but not wanting to frighten them. We have talked a lot about the baby and the way I feel, but I think it's such a strange concept to a 5 and 6 year old that think their Mom is invincible. I have noticed a lot of subtle testing going on to make sure I will still be the same Mom they have always known. Some things are not so subtle: "Mama, I am uncovered and can't get it straightened up!" I go to the rescue to find a sheet and blanket in place except for the top of a foot sticking out. Sigh. I guess that was a test.

I have determined that in a strange way this is a compliment. I have done such a good job taking care of these little men that they don't want anything to change. Yes, I have taken a positive outlook on the situation, because otherwise I would be overwhelmed with frustration. Don't get me wrong, the frustration is still there, but I am trying to keep my sense of humor through it all. Laughter is sometimes the best medicine for the entire family. Next time I see that foot sticking out I will laugh, cover it up and retain my status as Super Mom.
