What's Your Title?

By Cheryl Demas

It was one of those moments I wanted to freeze in time. I was driving the car and my little girl, Dani, was riding next to me, singing along with Blue's Clues. We were on out way to the mall to pick up my oldest daughter, Nicki. But first, we planned a visit to the toy store together. I knew Dani would be asking for '"cool" music before long, wanting to shop with her friends for clothes and jewelry instead of shopping with Mom for toys and candy. But for now, she was more than happy to be going on a trip to the toy store with me.

She interrupted my thoughts, "Mom? Will I always be able to call you 'Mom'?"

"Of course, Dani. What else would you call me?"

"Well, I was just thinking, when I get older, I might have to call you something else."

What should I call you? It does make a big difference you know. In your attitude, and how others see you. Are you really taking your business seriously? Do you give yourself credit for all the work you do?

I've talked to a lot of Work At Home Moms who have told me that they started to notice a difference in their businesses as soon as they gave themselves a title. Instead of minimizing their work, they would speak as if they were already successful. "I'm a writer, I design web sites, I'm a painter, I'm a graphic designer, I'm a business owner."

This week, give yourself credit for everything you do, give yourself a title. See if it doesn't make a difference for you too.

We all have many titles in our lives, some change, some don't. I may go back to a "real job" someday, I may change careers again, but I will always be Mom to my girls.

"Dani," I told her, "Remember when Grandma was here? And Daddy called her 'Mom'? And you said, 'Dad, Mom is in the kitchen, that's Grandma.'"

"Oh yea, he still calls Grandma 'Mom' so I guess I will always call you Mom."

"As long as you'll always be my Baby, I'll always be your Mom."

She agreed.
