But...Where Are The Giraffes?

By Cheryl Demas

My daughter will be 5 next month. We have been trying to decide what to do about her birthday party. There are so many decisions to be made. This is a big birthday for a little girl, so I've told her that she can choose where she has her party. I've presented her options, Chuck E. Cheese, McDonald's, The Gym, a Pool Party, a Pizza Party. She finally decided on a Zoo party. Our local zoo has a great birthday program. A zookeeper brings a few animals to your home, talks about them and gives the children a chance to pet or hold the animal if they wish to. They might bring a ferret, and a snake or an owl. So great, she decided on the Zoo Party. I waited a couple days just to be sure she wouldn't change her mind. Then, as I was about to send the deposit to the zoo, I asked one last time, "Now, you're sure you want the Zoo Party?" "Yes," she said, "I think my friends will like it, and we've never had giraffes at our house before."

Back to the drawing board.

I think this is such a difficult decision because there are just too many choices. I often get letters from women who really want to work from home, but they don't know what to do. I think to myself, "How can that be? There are so many things to choose from, so many business that can be run from home." Perhaps that is the problem. Too many choices.

So how does one decide what to do, how do you pick your party? I always tell people to think about the things they like to do, their skills and interests, and try to build a business around that. And look at the businesses other women are running, borrow ideas from them. If you choose something you enjoy, you will have a better chance of success. But be careful that you have realistic expectations, we're "work" at home moms for a good reason. If someone is trying to sell you on a business, they are going to present their best possible story, and tell you why their company is best.

So you have to ask the questions, find out exactly what is expected and what kind of results the typical salesperson can expect. Find out exactly what animals they will bring to the party, and then make your decision. My daughter probably will still have her zoo birthday, because animals are her "thing" right now, and I know she will have a good time. I just need to make sure that she has realistic expectations.

Of course, as difficult as it is, picking the business is the easy part. As any birthday mom knows, once the "party" starts, then the real work begins Ö running your business.

Just watch our for the giraffes.
