Everybody's Free

My advice to Work at Home Moms Sung to the tune of "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)"

WAHMs .... Don't stuff envelopes. If I can offer you only one tip, this is it.

No one will pay you $3.00 to lick an envelope, never have, never will.

Now, the rest of my advice.

Enjoy your kids. Trust me, in 20 years they will be gone. Their handprints will still be on your walls, but the pitter-patter of little feet will be a distant memory.

You probably have gained some weight since you started working at home. Sweats have elastic waistbands, remember? Lay off the chocolate.

Don't worry about your business; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to get connected to the internet by making modem sounds into your phone. The real troubles in your business are apt to pop up at 4 am when in a sleep-deprived fog you accidentally send a *very* personal love letter to 100 of your clients.

Make one new contact every day.

Don't be reckless with bandwidth and don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.

Back up your hard drive or you'll miss it when it's gone.

Maybe you'll make it, maybe you won't, maybe you'll be back to the old 9-5 job, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken when your company goes public and you make a bundle on stock options.

Shower.

Do NOT read business magazines, they will only make you feel poor.

Get to know your computer repair technicians, you never know when you'll need them at 5:30 pm on a Friday evening.

Be good to your modem. It is your link to the world.

Accept certain inalienable truths, your neighbor will never accept the fact that you "work"; your kids will never enjoy brussel sprouts; your husband will never willingly wash the dishes. Your kids will grow up, they'll have kids of their own and you will fantasize that when your kids were little, you never let them eat Fruit Loops for dinner.

Don't expect anyone to link to your site, if you don't link back to them.

Be careful who you listen too. If you really want to be home with your kids, you can probably find a way to do it. Remember, not everyone has your best interests in mind. No one can give you all the answers. Listen to your heart.

But trust me on the envelopes.
