By Cheryl Demas You couldn't miss the headlines this past week, our local news led with the story: "Working moms, lose your guilt. Children are not harmed by daycare." Funny, but I don't think this "good news" is going to send a huge rush of moms into the workplace. I don't know about other families, or thousands of studied children. I only know about my own children and my family. My kids are happy at home, I'm happy, and my husband's happy. The problem I see with all of these studies and the ensuing debates, is the assumption that parenting is a one way street with children making huge demands on their parents' time, energy and financial resources. Simply draining the parents and giving little in return. Do you get the feeling that we're being told that as long as we have the proof that our kids aren't harmed by daycare, there won't be a woman in her right mind who will choose, actually prefer, to stay at home and take care of her children? I don't know about you, but that hasn't been my experience. Being home with my kids isn't a sacrifice for me, it is a joy. Sure, I still have other interests, things I like to do that don't include the kids. That's one of the reasons why I have a home business. But nothing is more important to me than being here for my kids. I wouldn't trade these days for anything, money, status, titles, none of it means as much to me as my main title, "Mom." And judging by the number of visitors to WAHM.com and the mail I receive, there a lot of other moms who agree with me. This may not be your experience, I'm not trying to tell anyone what they should do , or presume to know what will make anyone else happy. I just know what makes me happy, and that's being home with my kids. But I guess, "Moms Love Being Home With Their Kids!" just doesn't make for a very exciting headline. *** Cheryl Demas creates a weekly cartoon/column for Work At Home Moms.
