Bigger, Brighter and More of It

By Catie Gosselin

I did grocery shopping today. I always run into trouble in there. Today in the checkout, my eyes rested upon some pretty strange headlines/promises on the "women's" magazines. One actually said, "Makeup Tricks That are Better Than Plastic Surgery". This didn't sell me. Isn't pretty much anything better than surgery? For Pete's sake, a final exam in Physics is better than surgery...well, granted not by much.

Another promised a "Better Body by January 2000". I have a problem with this one too. Can they really offer me knees that don't make funny "snap, crackle, pop" noises when I move? Can my sinuses really not threaten to explode at the threat of any oncoming storm? That is what I could really use. I'd also like to do something about my gums, but I won't go there right now.

The kicker is that these magazines feature the most ridiculous information. They have to, otherwise they wouldn't sell a copy. Using these two examples, I'll illustrate my point. Now, how many of you would be drawn to a headline that read "Plastic Surgery is Too Expensive for Most of Us. You're Stuck Looking Like That". How about the next example, "If You Starve Yourself Over the Next Few Months, You Will Gain it All Back, With Some Extra, In The New Year". Do either of these make you want to buy these magazines? If it's not snappy, catchy, sexy, it won't sell. Whether or not it is the truth is irrelevant.

The sad thing is that in an effort to sell some magazines, women and young girls are told they are not tall enough, skinny enough, smart enough, strong enough, sexy enough every month. I just don't buy it.
