Somewhere Between Two Worlds
By Catie Gosselin The days before and after a vacation are really strange. My mind has already set out to its eventual destination a few days before my body follows. Conversely, when it is time to return home, my mind tends to remain on vacation for a few days more than the rest of me. What is it about vacation that promotes this separation? I tend to do only what I really need or want while on vacation. I go to bed when I'm tired (no phones, televisions or computers to keep me up), I eat when I'm hungry, I read when I want to read....you get the idea. Oh, and did I mention that my emotional state just kind of flows while on vacation? What a difference in lifestyle compared to my daily routine! Now this leads to the me to wonder, if life flows so much more easily while in vacation mode, why would I consciously choose to live otherwise? Take a typical non-vacation day as an example. Let's say the kids and I want to spend the day at a museum. Now, I could either stress out about how long a shower will take me, if I packed enough snacks and books for the ride, what time I need to be home to get supper ready, and so on, or I could just be psyched to spend some time at the museum, whenever we get there. Notice the difference? I can either gear myself up and turn a day trip into a logistical nightmare or just take the day trip. It seems as if modern life has become a tangled web of overscheduling, over-stressing, and just over-doing in general. Nowhere is it written that we have to buy into this frantic, joyless pace of life. Trust me, I read the Rule Book when I was on vacation! - Catie
