From the Mouths of Babes
By Catie of Woman Links My birthday comes on the heels of my youngest son's birthday. By the time it is my turn for a birthday, I've already planned, decorated and baked for a family party and a children's party. Two cakes, eight goodie bags and a spaghetti and meatball dinner later, my birthday has kind of moved to the back burner. My sister was surprised this year to hear me ask that she neither buy nor make me a cake. By the time my son's celebrations are done, I'm too exhausted and sugared out to need a cake of my own. My idea of a good time is a little peace and quiet; a minute to catch my breathe. This year, my two sons gave me the most wonderful gifts; more than I could have ever wished for. My husband brought them shopping, telling them they could each pick out a small gift for me. Young kids, in general, haven't gotten caught up in the "I need to spend lots of money for this to be a good gift" frame of thinking. They follow their hearts instead. One of my youngest's favorite presents that he received at his birthday was his very own set of marbles. At four, he is finally able to have a collection like his big brother. Marbles are just about the coolest thing he knows. My baby chose to give me a set of my own marbles for my birthday. My oldest son loves nature, and also loves to look at all the "treasures" in my little jewelry box. It is a very interesting place with all sorts of shiny sparkly bobbles to explore. He wanted to get me something really special and sparkly for my jewelry box. My oldest chose a set of rhinestone encrusted butterfly barrettes for my gift. Both boys knew how special and precious their gifts would be to me. They were poised and ready for Mama's "Happy Tears" as I opened my gifts. Their gifts really weren't wrapped in tissue paper, or in sweet cards with gigantic lettering scrawled all over them. My boys gave me the gift of their hearts. I hope to remember how precious and freely-given their hearts are throughout this year. That will be my gift to them. - Catie
