Small Indulgences
by Catie While grocery shopping yesterday, I bought myself some apricot colored roses. They are absolutely gorgeous. I was immediately drawn to their unusual color. This month is full of celebrations, but I didn't buy the roses to celebrate Mother's Day, my anniversary, my son's birthday or the start of summer. When I bought coral tulips last week, it wasn't for any of these reasons either. I bought the flowers because I Am. I can see all your furrowed brows from here, so bear with me on this concept. As mothers, wives, partners, friends, aunts, sisters, co-workers, we give support on a daily basis without a second thought. How many of us would just say "that's too bad" and hang up the phone on a friend in need? Would anyone turn away from their child returning from school beaming with pride at a project finally completed? Hardly any I think. Women are brought up to selflessly give of their time, their shoulders, their humor, their strength to any in need. In certain instances, yes, that is a good thing. Too often, in being so giving and nurturing, we leave Ourselves out in the cold. Or when we do to remember ourselves, all too often it is in the form of food. Then, of course, the "I can't believe I just ate that, I'm so fat" mindset rears its ugly head, essentially taking away whatever "reward" we have given ourselves. So, I've decided in this celebratory month to remember Myself in all of the whirlwind of party planning. It costs me just a few dollars to get myself something beautiful, while I get food to feed the family each week. Just because I Am. There is an added bonus in all this too. My sons accompany me on my grocery trips. They see me rewarding myself with something I love. They are seeing that self-esteem and self-care are important. Caring for myself and teaching my children, what a concept, huh? Who but a woman could come up with such an efficient plan for the heart? Even if your treat is just taking a 15 minute break with a cup of hot tea, giving yourself time to grieve, or taking a mental cruise, there is always a reason to remember Yourself. Repeat after me... "I Am" ~Catie
