From the Paranoid Sisters

I'll never forget the day my husband and I discovered our dog hanging from the side of our pool, exhausted. The cement around her was crimson red and her paws raw and bloodied from trying to pull herself out. That day changed my life. My husband pulled her 55-pound tired body from the pool, a near tragedy. My motherly instinct took over, what if that would have been my child?

The sharing of that incident with my sister began a one and a half year research project on child safety, which led to our book Paranoid Sisters' Child Safety Made Easy. During our research we discovered that drownings are the fourth leading cause of death of children under five years of age in the US and the leading cause of death in some states such as California, Florida, and Arizona. We were also saddened to learn that over 3,000 children from birth to -five years old, die every year in the US due to unintentional injuries. Story after story of tragic death and injury to children of all ages followed. We felt compelled to share this information with other parents and caregivers. Through Child Safety Made Easy, public speaking, and media interviews, we are able to educate thousands of adults who care for little ones.

In 1999 we launched our web site www.paranoidsisters.com. Our web site allows us to keep caregivers up to date on the latest hazards facing children. It also allows us to link to and review many other resources such as the US Consumer Products Safety Commission's latest product recalls.

Now in it's third printing and available in Spanish, Paranoid Sisters' Child Safety Made Easy has been purchased by more than 150 child-oriented agencies as an educational tool. The authors, Lori Marques and Lisa Carter have appeared on more than 50 radio shows nationwide, done numerous interviews, appeared in safety segments on TV news shows, and conducted dozens of safety seminars all in the name of saving a child's life.

September is National Baby Safety Month, sponsored by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association. During this month Paranoid Sisters and BabyCenter.com, a leading web site for new and expectant parents, have teamed up to promote child safety and educate parents on this important issue.
